For this final blog post, I will be rewriting my response for blog post 1 based on the feedback I was provided on my peers. This post will incorporate: 1. The re-written critical reflection 2. A screenshot of the feedback that my peers provided 3. A copy of the original critical reflection Do Digital Natives really exist? In today’s world, we see digital natives everywhere we look. We live in a world that is surrounded by many forms of technology. The 21st century, in which we live in, it is impossible not to be surrounded by ‘smart devices’, no matter where we go. On my journey to University the other day, majority of the train carriage, including myself, was either on their phone, listening to music, or even typing away on their laptops. Majority of adolescents living today in the 21st cetury have the latest mobile device, laptop, Ipod, gaming system, and therefore it is very difficult not to label them as digital natives. So what exactly is a digital native? A digital native is most commonly described as “someone who grew up with technology being easily accessible, and therefore using it from a young age”. Moreover, this introduction to technology in the early years is believed to give digital natives a greater familiarity with and understanding of technology than people who were born in the 20th century. ("What is a Digital Native? - Definition from Techopedia", 2016). From a very young age, children have grown up with the innovation of various forms of digital items on a daily basis. Today’s students are representatives of the first generation in the society to grow up with this new technology. In most schooling environments, there is technology being incorporated within the classroom, from laptops to interactive whiteboards, students are continuously engaging with content in a digital way rather than hard copies. ‘They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age’ (Prensky, 2001). As a result of this many ethical issues can be identified, the current generation of digital natives learn differently to what the traditional education system taught 10-20 years ago, as they have relied on technology their whole lives. This early exposure to video games and other interactive entertainment has caused “Today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors” (Prensky, 2001). Furthermore, these young individuals have been bought up very differently to their parents and even grand-parents, they study, work, write, and interact with each other in in very different ways as opposed to older generations ("Born Digital - Understanding the first generation of digital natives", 2016). Therefore, this makes the rest of us digital immigrants, the digital immigrants are those who have dealt with this era as it has unfolded and have had to learn to adapt to the constantly changing technology of today. Digital natives will always live in a world, dependent on technology as they are unaware of what life would be like without technology available to them 24/7. To conclude, it is the significant difference between digital natives and digital immigrants that proves that digital natives really do exist!! How changes in technology impact on the way humans communicate, and the ethical issues that surround these changes...Today, in the 21st century, majority of Australian citizens utilize various forms of modern technology throughout their daily lives, whether it’s used for communication, social media, gaming, education, work, etc. all humans use it in some way. Today, majority of Australian citizens rely on the use of a mobile smart phones or chord-less phones to text and call back and forth to friends and family, with most individuals on phone plans that allow unlimited calls and texts to anyone within the country. Over the past century, we have seen a massive growth in the development of technology. Years ago, communication between people was made through letters which were posted back and forth between people, where they sometimes had to wait weeks and even months to receive a reply in the mail. Emailing systems have made this type of communication a whole lot easier and quicker for individuals to receive messages from across the world. Many innovations have been made to phones and laptops to enable humans to communicate easily with the simple click of a button, where messages are sent and received within seconds. Social media systems such as facetime and skype, have made catching up and talking with friends and family who may be all the way on the other side of the country and even world a whole lot better, as we don’t have to go weeks without seeing their faces and hearing their voices. Although these drastic changes in technology over the past 20 years have made communication between individuals a whole lot easier and more efficient, many ethical issues surround these changes. This is because there is an increasing amount of communication over social media rather than human contact between people. I believe that the major ethical issue that surrounds this change in technology is the fact that once a message is sent over social media it is out there forever. There is no going back, as it may have been screenshotted, saved and even forwarded to others, causing major issues between individuals. This increasing use of social media has resulted in cyber bullying, meaning that the internet is not a safe place to be on, due to things not always being kept confidential. Furthermore, the new technologies available in today’s society, encourage people to do everything on their phone, for example typing a question into google or asking ‘Siri’ rather than asking a human being on the street, furthermore it is also making it easier for people to self-diagnose themselves as opposed to seeing a doctor. Smart devices, now have mobile data available for use in majority of the world, meaning that access to internet sources and social media is made easier, and people are tending to use their phones more than actually talking to the people in front of them as a result of constant network updates. Moreover, young children are lacking in communication skills such as talking and interacting with others due to always having some type of smart device in front of them. Play dates are not as what they used to be, children are locked to an Ipad screen instead of playing outside with their friends in the park. To conclude, we need to ensure that as a whole community that we still make an effort to treat others how we would like to be treated, especially seeing as nearly everything is done over the internet nowadays… Visual portrait of The Evolution of Mobile Phones [Infographic] - HighDefGeek. Why do I need to manage my project design and implementation ?Within the unit COMM140, for the group assignment, with the driving question "Can technology be used to motivate children?”, we are required to create an interactive digital item for children aged between 7-11. This assignment requires me alongside two of my peers to utilize our time and collaborate together ideas that meet the requirements of the assignment. Together, we will be required to appropriately manage our time to plan and make the digital product come to life. It is therefore very important to appropriately manage the different components of the design process, this initial planning was completed through using mind maps to identify features of the target audience, creating timelines and deadlines, and most importantly the peer feedback and evaluation to realise that the initial product that we intended to create was not realistic, and some modifications would need to be implemented to make it achievable. When designing a project, it is important to facilitate the ideas and implementation of the project in order to understand and keep track of what has been done and what needs to still be completed in the planning and design process. From studying Food & Technology in secondary school, I was aware of the order of the processes followed by creating a product, and the evaluation and reflection of the product that comes after, which involves evaluating and reflecting on things that went well or could be improved in the final product as well assessing the process that was used to get to the stage of having the physical product. Based on the content in the lectures, I have learnt that the design process is a quite lengthy process, and requires a lot of research, problem solving, and patience in order to achieve what you want. Overall, I feel that we need to manage and implement the design process accurately within the assignment, and remember that we must keep the product simple when creating it, and in doing this we must ‘steal like an artist’ in order to expand our ideas and make the digital product simple but very appealing to children. A digital native is described to be someone who grew up with technology being easily accessible, and therefore using it from a young age. In society today, technology is included in everyone’s life. From a very young age, today's modern students, are constantly using various forms of technology through their daily lives and due to this they can be described as digital natives. This is due to the students today all being “natural speakers of the digital language of computers, video games, and especially the internet”. The constant use of all of this technology has resulted in a change in the way they behave as well as affecting the behaviour of their brains. Children are exposed to technology from the moment that they are born these days, we see young infants playing on their parents iPhone instead of interacting with other children and playing with toys indoors and outdoors. I believe this is the case because most parents these days are too busy working and find it easier to hand their child a phone rather then play with them. Furthermore, majority of adolescents living today in the 21st cetury have the latest mobile device, laptop, Ipod, Televisions, gaming systems, etc, and therefore it is very difficult not to label them as digital natives.
